Support a Sustainability Bill of Rights for Santa Monica

Let's make sure our community rights and the rights of Nature thrive, so we survive!

In 1994, Santa Monica established the city’s first comprehensive Sustainability Plan. The city and community have worked hard to protect the natural ecosystems that make life possible. It is time for these sustainability goals to be legal, enforceable obligations and not just voluntary intentions.
Highlights of the SBR ordinance:
- Mandates city decisions be guided by environmental concerns;
- Protects the right of people, over corporations, to access clean air, land, and water;
- 100% self-sufficiency in development of a local water supply by 2020;
- 100% sustainable net renewable energy used in the City by 2020;
- 50% increase by 2020 in total miles of bike paths and bike lanes over 2005 levels;
- 25% of the food sold in the City originating from sustainable food systems.

Should Santa Monica Airport Be Closed?
Debate continues as Santa Monica Airport critics call for the airport to close when the
federal lease expires in 2015. Santa Monica, Venice and West LA
neighbors, concerned about air and noise pollution hazards, suggest
the land be used for an expanded park, botanical garden, urban garden
or "green" retirement community. Meanwhile, others call for an immediate ban on jets,
as the airport was never intended for jet use and nearby residents point to the
lack of a safety buffer zone.

Provide Input on Santa Monica’s Urban Forest Plan
http://www.smgov.net/portals/urbanforest/

A Message from Santa Monica Green Linda Piera-Avila,
a member of the Urban Forest Task Force
Santa Monica's Urban Forest Master Plan Task Force works to ensure that the environmental, social, aesthetic and economic benefits of a healthy community forest are available to Santa Monica residents and visitors for generations to come. As an advisory group to the City Council, the Task Force will seek and use input from the community and professional experts to form an Urban Forest Master Plan that will guide the conservation and enhancement of tree canopy coverage over the entire city. The Task Force regards the process of forming the plan, and subsequent periodic updates to that living document, as critical opportunities to widely disseminate information about the importance of the community forest and to educate residents about best practices they can follow to help sustain it.
